Porto Garibaldi, originally a fishing village that later developed into a town around the port, was the first seaside resort on the coast. Once known as Lido di Magnavacca, in 1919 it took on its current name, named after the hero of the Two Worlds, to commemorate his landing here on August 3, 1849, during his escape from the Austrians.

With the reconstruction after World War II, all the streets of this ancient seaside resort were named after the most significant moments and characters of Garibaldi's epic journey.

The town is characterized by low buildings, which maintain the appearance of a fishing village, along the navigable canal that connects Comacchio to the sea. The fishermen of Portogaribaldi are one big family, returning early in the morning with flocks of hungry seagulls around their boats, named after women, carried out to sea for days and nights in search of fish, unloaded in a whirlwind of voices and ancient symbols.

A precious and fresh catch to be savored in the numerous restaurants or at home, following the instructions of those who have always lived off the fish. Porto Garibaldi overlooks the sea, but it is also the outlet of a long waterway that leads inland to Ferrara, whose use depends on the seasonal flow of the Po River.

Every year, folkloric events are held on the canal port, such as the Feast of Our Lady of the Sea in June, the traditional procession with decorated boats, and the great Feast of Hospitality in Ferraragosto.
