Another fine artistic destination is Pomposa Abbey, about 20 kilometers from the town of Comacchio. An ancient Benedictine monastery that arose from the settlement of a group of Benedictine monks from Ravenna between the 6th and 7th centuries.

In the centuries of the Abbey's splendor, architectural and pictorial arts flourished, leaving us especially the marvelous 14th-century cycles of the Basilica, Refectory and Chapter House.

Then, following catastrophic events, culminating in the so-called rout of the Po at Ficarolo, which is traced back to 1152, economic and cultural interest abandoned the coastal territory, now overrun by water, and the monks left Pomposa for the new convent of St. Benedict of Ferrara.

The recovery of the 'Abbey was then implemented from the late '800, when all the buildings were acquired by the state property and brought back to life.

Those who love ancient art should not miss the opportunity to admire one of the most precious cycles of frescoes in the entire province, inspired by Giotto's style; the abbey then holds other beauties, such as the architecture of the church and bell tower with majolica, friezes, sculptures, mosaic floors, and the artifacts housed in the Pomposian Museum
